What makes Graduate Medical Education (GME) so special at Sparrow?

The vital link to academic medicine: Michigan State University (MSU) hosts the College of Human Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and many other departments which set the foundation for clinical and academic leadership through a stimulating environment. All of Sparrow’s internships, residencies and fellowships are affiliated with one or both of the nationally recognized MSU medical schools, a partnership that encourages excellence.

Educational and clinical resources: The faculty at Sparrow believes you cannot learn to be tomorrow’s specialist with yesterday’s resources. You will find the best clinical facilities and equipment at Sparrow, and people with the expertise to use it. You will find residents with handheld computers, linked to the Internet, and your training clinic will use wireless tablet computers and a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system. You will have opportunities to use the clinical and educational technology on a wide variety of challenging pathology.
The faculty: Outstanding clinicians, dedicated teachers, willing supervisors, and personal mentors. These are the characteristics of our program directors and faculty.
The academic culture: As a resident or intern at Sparrow, you will be challenged to practice Evidence Based Medicine in the classroom and at the bedside. Your program directors and assigned mentor take a direct interest in your personal educational plan, and arrange the resources and opportunities to develop the knowledge, procedural skills, and professionalism you need to meet your goals.

Welcome! As program director of the Sparrow Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program, I  would like to thank you for taking the time to learn more about our program. We are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to you, and we truly believe that this residency program will rise to the top of our profession. This program was conceived as a collaboration between MSU-COM, the highest ranking Osteopathic college in the nation, and Sparrow Hospital, the largest and most diverse hospital in the mid-Michigan region. MSU-COM and Sparrow Hospital have a long tradition of excellence in graduate medical education, and we have worked hard to bring the most outstanding attributes of both institutions together in this new program.

This is an exciting time in the mid-Michigan region. High level discussions have already begun to promote even more collaboration between the medical entities in the area, including Sparrow Hospital, Ingham Regional Medical Center, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the MSU College of Human Medicine. We hope to eventually expand our program into a dually certified (AOA and ACGME) program that will set the national standard for community-based postgraduate medical education. We hope you will share in the excitement and join us for an outstanding education in internal medicine.          Tom Mohr,D.O
